The yen held its gains on Thursday after a sudden, brief surge in the previous session that traders suspect may have been driven by government authorities, keeping pressure on the dollar ahead of a crucial US jobs report.

The dollar slipped on Friday and was set to end a bumpy week lower, as investors questioned whether the US Treasury's efforts to calm the bond markets might end up undermining confidence in the currency.

Those concerns pushed the euro up 0.13% to US$1.1694, on course for its fourth consecutive weekly gain. The British pound was up 0.15% to US$1.3652, holding close to its highest since May.

Dollar wobbles as Treasury's bond-market buybacks raise fresh concerns

The US dollar was pinned near a three-month low on Thursday after the Treasury Department moved to calm a bond market selloff that had pushed long-end yields to their highest since 2007, lifting risk sentiment and undercutting the currency.

The dollar index, which measures the dollar against six other currencies, was at 98.723, its lowest level since May 14. The euro was at US$1.1692, perched at the highest level since mid-May.

ING global head of markets Chris Turner said the Treasury's move to increase buybacks of Treasury securities with maturities between 10 and 30 years should reassure markets that longer-dated bonds are unlikely to face a disorderly selloff.

The dollar's advance stalled on Thursday after an overall benign US inflation reading overnight spurred traders to pare back bets for a near-term Federal Reserve interest rate hike.

The greenback was little changed against the yen in Asia's afternoon, but remained on course to gain about 1% this week as markets bought back the currency pair following recent joint US-Japan intervention that saw it plummet to a three-month low.
